It was the first day of the 3 big
Group 1 racedays at Morphettville. Imported galloper Ominous was
took good in leading most of the way in the first race while Mighty Like
made it three in a row and 5 out of 11 overall in winning the second
race.
It was then to the six stakesraces for the day - of these 3 races were
won by horses that had won at the lead up meeting a fortnight earlier
plus Go Indy Go another winner from that meeting (of the SA Sires
Produce renown for producing future Group 1 competitors) went to
Randwick to win the Group 1 Champagne Stakes. The Queen Adelaide
Stakes went to Bullpit who never looked in doubt racing clear in the
straight to win as he liked taking his record to 4 starts for 2 wins
while the Chairman's Stakes was taken out by Gamblin' Guru from Excites
Zelady with Gravitational third. It was Gamblin' Guru's second win
in a row having taken out the Port Adelaide Guineas two weeks ago and is
reported to be heading for the SA Derby.
The Queen of the South Stakes went to
Tango's Daughter who had also won the previous fortnight as she took her
record to three in a row and 5 from 9 overall. The first of the
Group 1s of the day was the Australasian Oaks where a wall of horses
stormed down the straight with May's Dream proving too strong from Star
Fashion and Scratchy Bottom. May's Dream is from She's Archie who
won the Group 1 SA Oaks and was a fast finishing and unlucky second to
Makybe Diva in the Melbourne Cup.
In the Sangster Stakes a classy field
of sprinting mares and fillies lined up. Driefontein who had won
the RN Irwin Stakes a fortnight earlier went to the lead and defied all
attempts to run her down over the 1200m course. Platelet stormed
home late to run second with Gregers who had followed Driefontein the
whole way fighting hard to hold third ahead of Villa Verde who had won
the Challenge Stakes and was placed in the Galaxy at the Sydney carnival
before heading to SA. Driefontein is reportedly heading to the
Goodwood in two weeks all going well.
The final race was the open lead up
to the Goodwood the DC McKay Stakes where Essay Raider cruised just off
the pace before taking control and stroling away from the opposition in
the run to the line. Essay Raider is the full brother of Go Indy
Go and brought up the family two state stakesrace double in taking out
the race. |
