This year Adelaide Cup day at Morphettville hosted the South Austalian heats of the Inaugural Nation Pony Racing Series with two races to be decided. The winners and runners up in each race won  a trip to Sydney for the finals to be held at Royal Randwick on April 20 durign the Autumn carnival.  Each pony and rider had to qualify through TASTER Days where they were selected to then take part in Training Days where the finalist for the state heats were chosen.  In the Pony races each rider carried the colours of a racing sponsor and represented their Pony Club.  Some of Australia's top racing studs, owners, trainers and industry supplies are amongst the sponsors.  The National Pony Racing Series is an initiative of Thoroughbred Industry Careers in conjunction with Pony Club Australia  for pony club members to take part to learn new skills in pony health & fitness and learn about the rules & safety and future careers in the racing and breeding industry & to compete on Australia's best racecourses on feature racedays

The Large ponies (ponies 12.2 - 13.3hh) raced over 650m and into the straight it was a two horse war with Cheyenne Crane & Phoenix drawing away to win from Ruby Davis & George with Shilo Berden & Pony Power third.   Cheyenne Crane is from Naracoorte represented Apsley Pony club which is just over the Victorian border and was riding in the Seymour Bloodstock colours.  She is very accomplished at a young age and started retraining an off the track thoroughbred at only 10 years of age and wants to be a jockey in the future.  Her pony Phoenix runs with the off the track TBs at home and has everyone convinced she thinks of herself as a racehorse.  Second place was taken out by Ruby Davis and George who was representing Benalla Pony Club and was in the colours of Frank and Christine Cook.  Ruby is a massive fan of horse racing and also follows the off the track thoroughbreds in equestrian events as well as going to the races while George her pony loves swimming.  Third place up against the rail was Shilo Berden & Pony Power from the Strathalbyn Pony Club who were in the colours of Yulong Stud.  Shilo enjoys riding at the beach while Pony Power also enjoys working cattle.  The Best Presented sponsored by Ariat went to Alix Haverland riding Denny representing Globe Derby Pony Club and in the colours of Goldolphin.  Alix has participated in the pony trot races held during harness race meetings at Globe Derby while Denny is often described as lazy but was quick enough to be chosen to for a berth in the race.

The Small ponies (under 12.2hh) was over 450m and Stacey Edwards & Napolean gave nothing else a chance speeding along the rail to win from Maddi-Rose Cox and Dreamtime Park Rosalie.  Stacey who rode i the colours of Peachester Lodge had been keen to race (and win) in the pony race and did a lot of work with Napolean which has paid off with their impressive win.  Second was taken out by Maddi-Rose Cox riding Dreamtime Park Rosalie who was representing Goolwa District Pony Club and riding in the Ranvet colours.  Maddi-Rose is the daughter of David Jolly's foreman Trace Cox and rides racehorses working with the stable.  Dreamtime Park Rosalie loves hot chips & tomato sauce when in her job as a companion pony to racehorses on raceday and  is owned by jockey Maggie Collett pictured below giving Maddi-Rose some last minute tips.  Third place went to Tahnee Dodgson & MIss Wood Poetry and Tahnee represented the Naracoorte Hunt Pony Club and rode in the colours of Pinecliff Racing.  Tahnee is the daughter of trainers James & Lisa in Bordertown while MIss Wood Poetry loves jumping and being loud so every knows she is there.  Best Presented went to Harry Downer & Drumeden Centre Stage representing Onkaparinga Pony Club and in the colours of Hermitage Thoroughbreds.  It was the first time Harry and Drumeden Centre Stage had tried pony racing but they compete in showing and eventing.
