The Saturday of the October long
weekend is the date of the annual Jamestown Cup meeting which is located
about a 2 1/2 hour drive north of Adelaide.
In the first race Speculate was returning from a long spell and as a
previous winner at Jamestown was expected to run well. Around the
home turn Speculate joined the leader and fleetingly look to have the
race but it was soon in the form King Rodney who powered home down the
outside to win hard held. King Rodney has won numerous times at
Port Augusta and Morphettville Parks this year and despite being
allocated topweight was never in danger taking his record to 23 starts
for 5 wins and 10 placings. A 6yo bay gelding his is by Carbon
Prince from Tina and is trained by Ron Campbell of Gawler and was ridden
by Michael Schrapel. Speculate was second and Perfect Beau was
third.
In the second race Chenelle Ellis made her riding debut on Delicious Shot
who was resuming from a spell and was a bit of handful pre race.
Refract was resuming from a year long spell (previous start was running
a close third at Jamestown in 2011) and after being the standout on
looks in the yard pre race he gave nothing else a chance racing clear
down the straight to win easily from Bit O'Me and She's Molly.
Refract is a 4yo chestnut gelding who has now had 5 starts for 1 win and
three placings and a close 5th at Morphettville Parks. By Get
Square from Rainbow Flame he is trained by Ryan McGorman at Gawler and
was ridden by Jake Toeroek.
A small field lined up for the third race where Thorny Devil made it 2
in a row winning from Logically with Torpify third. Thorny Devil
is by King of Roses from Stretta (who won 9 races) and is trained by
Jess Giles of Murray Bridge and was ridden by Jake Toeroek. He now
takes his record to 13 starts for 3 wins and 4 placings and in the past
has finished close up to performers such as Petman and El Magico.
In the 4th race Ordynski's Hill held off the fast finishing Champagne
Kris with Ontheroad for Gold having its second race start third.
Ordynski's Hill is a 4yo bay gelding by Umatilla from Amenace and his
record is now 8 starts for a win and three placings. Trained by
Rodney Irons of Port Augusta he was ridden by Tara O'Donnell.
A field of 8 lined up in the Jamestown Cup where Okaman led from Cross
Constance with Pelekunu Valley out wider and Miss Ball back on the rail.
Turning for home Pelekunu Valley put in his bid but it was Miss Ball
getting through along the rails who surged to the front after a brief
battle with Cross Constance and raced away to win. Cross Constance
was second with Pelekunu third. Miss Ball was sold through the
Adelaide Magic Millions Sales as a yearling and started her career as a
2yo in November 2004 with a placing at Morphettville. Numerous
placings and wins at the three Metropolitan tracks in Adelaide followed
plus a third placing in the 2006 Bordertown Cup. Retired in May
last year she returned to the track in August and third up was third in
the Halidon Cup before winning at Jamestown. Trained by Peter
Lawrence at Gawler she was ridden by Lauren Stojakovic and takes her
record to 52 starts for 8 wins 9 seconds and 7 third for over $100,000
in prizemoney.
In the last race Jess Giles trained her second winner
of the day as Ramsgate stormed home in the closing stages to defeat
Genarka Star and Regal Ruben to give Jake Toeroek a treble for the day
and 4 of the 6 races to Gawler trained horses. Ramsgate is a 6yo
brown gelding by Carnegie from Alluding who started his career racing at
Morphettville before becoming a regular of the provincial circuit taking
his record to 23 starts for 2 wins and 4 placings.
The weather held off and although there was a cold wind all there a good
sized crowd turned up and it was another good country race meeting that
is worth attending if you get the chance.
